I appreciate...
Dear Sheets,
Thank you for being part of my family. You are warm and soft, especially the top of your head, which feels like velvet. Your fastidiousness, while sometimes aggravating, is mostly charming, and your sweet sad face is most endearing. I love the way you fold your paws, like a delicate lady, and the way you sit on people's laps as if you were much smaller than your already-small self. It makes me smile to watch you perch in unlikely places, like the back of the couch, or to see you standing on your back legs and looking out the window just like a small child. I know that you do not know you're a dog. You think you're a human, or a cat, or a mountain goat. I know you're a person. I have always heard about the way dogs smell, but I find your smell comforting, it is somewhat sweet and musky, but not strong. It reminds me of sunshine and other warm things. Often you seem to smell rather like cookies. How ever do you manage that? When you choose to be cuddly, I always feel very privileged, because I know you like your space. And even when you are not interested in cuddling, I like that you curl up near me and keep me company. You are such a gentle one, Sheets, that I cannot believe I was ever afraid of you. Thank you for being patient with me during that time. I hope you are as happy being with me as I am with you. It seems to me that you are. It makes me happy to watch you race around the back yard, and I am impressed again and again with your agility. I promise to continue to love you and cherish you, so please keep loving me, too, and surprising me with your personality and amazing feats.
Love,
