We have just run a practice encounter with Paul. "We" is all of us playing in Paul's one-shot, except Aedan. It was quite fun, although I need to be more free using my encounter-level attack-spells. Ana, Suki, and I agree that we should definitely coordinate our attacks more, since they can feed off each other. Especially Ana and I, since we are melee fighters with similar abilities (only she has a divine power source and I'm a bit dark). The discussion with Paul and Suki afterward have helped to flesh out the backgrounds of both Suki's tiefling character (as yet unnamed, possibly "Penance") and Finster.

The night Finster was abandoned by the Pearl League, they were raiding a town with a temple of Kastivors Luko, where Suki's tiefling (from here on: ST) is studying the religion. ST leaves the temple to aid the clerics in fending off the pirates, precipitating the sudden departure which leaves Finster stranded. The townspeople turn on him, and he panics. Sensing his desperation and that he is not a truly evil character, ST extricates him from his perilous situation. The two become friends, and when ST is finished studying, they go off adventuring.

We're also thinking that since ST and Anya's paladin character--who has a name which I remember but don't know how to spell--had a relationship, that Finster was present to witness it from beginning to end, and is thus privy to ST's torment and heartbreak. If Anya is amenable, the paladin will have attempted to seduce Finster when he was ready to move on from ST, but upon being rejected moves on. Thus, ST is heartbroken and Finster blames himself for his friend's pain. At the same time, ST blames himself for Finster being abandoned by the Pearl League.

This way, if we can just figure out how a paladin ended up kicking it with a tiefling and an unlucky human hexblade, we'll have lots of character connection. Dano's character Ricimer is a drug-addict elf wizard in the custody of Aedan's as-yet unnamed drow hexblade. Ana's cleric Valin (ha, I remembered one) is the only one I know of who is not connected to anyone yet.

Paul is thinking that the others participated in a sting operation against the Pearl League, which might explain how they know each other and I how I might know them. I like all the interconnections. It's much more interesting than a bunch of loners coming together for their own reasons.

I hope to include more as the background's come together. Yay.

I would write about other stuff, but I don't feel like it. Maybe tomorrow (i.e. later today, since it's 3am).

Finster has bad luck. Not luck so colossally bad as to cause major tragedies and catastrophes on a regular basis, but also not so mild as to be nothing more than an inconvenience. This luck is not just bad as much as that it has uncanny timing, always striking at the worst possible or most unexpected moment, or being so subtle as not to be noticeable except with the benefit of hindsight.
