Colorado Poem

Bare rock along distant cliff face,
jagged slices show the mountain's soul.
The earth reveals her true self
to the sky--
shows her strength, might,
steadfastness--
all for him.
You may be the sky,
infinite, vast, arching over the world,
but I am not the mountain beneath you.
I do not have her deep roots,
her slow, imperceptible changeability.
Mine is not a towering, solid strength.
I am the wind, racing through your vastness.
My strength moves the sea,
it tears at trees,
it beats relentlessly against the mountain.
Always I am chasing you,
in twisting paths I dance over the earth,
yet never reach you.
You are ever beyond my touch
until I am whirling, lost, among distant stars,
alone in a vast universe
without having touched you.
